Class Description

George Eliot’s first novel is a striking and surprisingly modern examination of love, hypocrisy, sexuality, and the circumstances of early adulthood that shape a person’s entire life. This class presents Adam Bede serially, in manageable weekly readings and discussions, to allow for a full appreciation of Eliot’s unique narrative art and philosophy.

Steven J. Venturino, PhD, the author of The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Literary Theory and Criticism, has led seminars at the Newberry Library and taught at Loyola University Chicago.
