A Studio of Her Own: Women Artists from the Middle Ages to Today

This seminar surveys the achievements of women in the visual arts from the Middle Ages to the present. Besides exploring the artistic development of individual artists in Western culture, we will examine the conditions and contexts in which these artists worked, and their relationships to society and to each other.

As a precaution to help reduce the spread of COVID-19, the Adult Education Seminars Program’s Fall 2020 term will continue to be held virtually. Seminar Description

This seminar surveys the achievements of women in the visual arts from the Middle Ages to the present. Besides exploring the artistic development of individual artists in Western culture, we will examine the conditions and contexts in which these artists worked, and their relationships to society and to each other. Additionally, we will consider how their works related to the broader artistic concerns of their times.

Six sessions. Registration – $230

Margaret Farr is an art historian who has worked at the Art Institute of Chicago for over 22 years and has taught at numerous colleges and universities. A specialist in 19th-century art, her interests include modern and contemporary art. She currently is an adjunct lecturer at the Art Institute.

  • A free digital course packet of additional material, compiled by the instructor and distributed electronically before the seminar begins.

First Reading:

  • For the first session, please read Linda Nochlin’s essay “Why Have There Been No Great Women Artists?” from Women, Art, and Power and Other Essays (a digital file of this reading will be sent with the email confirming your registration).
