On this bus tour through Chicago's South Side, explore how religious institutions and leaders in the Hyde Park and Woodlawn neighborhoods responded to racial change, urban renewal, community organizing, and struggles for justice during the 1960s. Through visits to churches, synagogues, and historically significant neighborhood sites, participants will learn about the diverse ways faith communities shaped public life during a pivotal era in the city’s history.

A boxed lunch will be provided. Full details on the tour, speakers, and meeting place will be forthcoming.

This program is part of Beyond Belief: Religion and Social Change in 1960s Chicago, a wide-ranging, multi-year public humanities initiative at the Newberry exploring the role of religious communities in movements for civil rights, urban change, activism, and social transformation in Chicago during the 1960s and beyond. The project is generously supported by Lilly Endowment Inc., through its Religion and Cultural Institutions Initiative.
