Class Description
Learn about the traditional craft of broom making while making your own hand broom! In this workshop, students will learn basic techniques, become familiar with the history of American broom making traditions and materials, and discuss the importance of preserving endangered cultural practices through making with your own hands. Students will leave with two beautiful and functional hand brooms they make using demonstrated structural and decorative techniques.
First we will look at the history of broom making, discuss what is a dying or endangered craft, and then we will move to a discussion portion to have students share their experience with crafting or preserving cultural practices.
From this point, we will look at examples of contemporary broom making, and then begin the making portion of the class. All students will make a turkey wing hand broom in order to learn the fundamental skills needed to make a broom. When all students have a completed broom, we will discuss the customizations they can make, I will demonstrate various customizations. Students will then have time to make a second broom using the different demoed techniques with instructor support.
Liv Koreman is a ceramicist, quilter, broom maker, and weaver. They learn about the natural world by crafting with foraged materials. When not making art, Liv works as the Public Programs Manager at the Newberry or can be found swimming in Lake Michigan.
