Seminar Description

When people think of Scotland, the images that come to mind are usually images of the Scottish Highlands: clans and tartans, mountains and glens, Gaelic language and Gaelic culture. This seminar will examine how the Highlands came to represent all of Scotland by exploring how the region is depicted in poetry, music, theater, film, and television. We will conclude with a discussion of the effect of Brexit on the Highlands and Scotland more generally.

Born in Glasgow, June Sawyers has written and lectured extensively on Scotland and Scottish culture. She is associate producer of a forthcoming documentary on the Scottish Diaspora and is the author of a screenplay on the Highland Clearances.
