Seminar Description

As a global cultural capital, Paris was central to the development of modernism in the arts. Topics to be treated in this exploration of Paris from the turn-of-the-century to the mid-twentieth century will include the emergence of Cubism and Fauvism; the experience of the First World War; the cultural vitality of Paris in the interwar years, including Dada and Surrealism; collaboration and resistance during the Nazi occupation; existentialism; and post-war political controversies.

Frank Biletz received his Ph.D. in history from the University of Chicago, with a primary specialization in modern British and Irish history. He is currently an adjunct instructor of history at Loyola University Chicago and has been teaching seminars at the Newberry since 1994.
