Colloquium: Tracing "The Mysterious Gauze": Genealogy, Identity, and the Vaudeville Stage

Description

In the late 19th and early twentieth century, Willis Gauze, a Black Indigenous Canadian performer known onstage as "The Mysterious Gauze" performed all over the world, including Chicago. Gauze appeared as a female impersonator performing solo and with a variety of vaudeville companies, yet much of his story has remained difficult to document. Using genealogical and historical resources—including census records, vital records, newspapers, city directories, and theatrical ephemera—Jo Ellen will share how scattered evidence can be brought together to reconstruct the life of this unconventional performer.
