Conceived in Liberty Opening

"The Past and the Present are in Deadly Grapple," From the President's Independence Day Speech, July 6, 1918, Modern MS McCutcheon

In appreciation of their generous support of the Newberry, Newberry Associates at the Humanists level and above, President's Fellows, and other select Newberry supporters are invited to the exhibition opening of Conceived in Liberty.

This exhibition explores the diverse, inspiring, and contradictory ways that liberty has been conceived and realized by the people of the United States. Conceived in Liberty asks what, if anything, justifies limitations on human liberty, and what does a dedication to liberty demand of us?

View magazine illustrations, caricatures, editorial cartoons, broadsides, and more created by visual artists living through wartime in the US depicting the tensions at the core of the nation's purpose and identity.
