Class Description
During the holiday season, Italians bake elaborate, centuries-old confections that are the culinary crown jewels of the region or town. In this class, you’ll get a glimpse into the often-unfamiliar realm of Italian holiday pastries. We’ll start with an introduction to the history of holiday desserts and how religion, geography, and trade led to the creation of beloved Italian favorites. Then, you’ll find out about the practical purposes of holiday desserts and the science behind them. We’ll discuss a selection of regional pastries eaten throughout the Christmas season and the stories they tell. Finally, we’ll see how the Italian diaspora brought their ancestral traditions abroad and transformed them into beloved holiday favorites in their new adopted homeland. Throughout the class, there will be a sample of Italian holiday pastries for participants to try.
Kelsey Trotta is a culinary translator. Her former clients include Milk Street TV and The New York Times. She’s given lectures for the American Translators Association, the Institute of Translation and Interpretation Food & Drink Network, and the Newberry Library.

Following the models of other institutions, we want to ensure that our classes are accessible to a wider audience while continuing to support our instructors.
