Katie to Effa to Dot: Women in Baseball History, Literature, and Film

Every 7th inning stretch, fans sing along with the chorus to “Take Me Out to the Ballgame,” but few know its verses, which tell the story of “baseball mad” Katie Casey. The only woman in the Baseball Hall of Fame is Effa Manley, once owner of the then-Negro Leagues’ Newark Eagles.

As a precaution to help reduce the spread of COVID-19, the Adult Education Seminars Program’s Summer 2020 term will be moving online. Seminar Description

If you’re a season ticket holder, you owe that privilege (or burden) to Cubs executive Midge Donohue, who invented the concept in 1929. This seminar will explore depictions of the women who were players, fans, and executives throughout the history of America’s national pastime.

Six sessions. Registration – $210

Bill Savage has been teaching courses on baseball history, literature, and film at Northwestern University and the Newberry Library for over 20 years. A member of the Society for American Baseball Research, he wrote about the Cubs for ESPN in 2016 and believes that Cubs and Sox fans should get along better.
