Class Description
In the early to mid-20th century, four enduring cultural icons emerged: Frankenstein (1931), King Kong (1933), Godzilla (1954), and the modern picture postcard. Join master paper engineer Shawn Sheehy in re-living those moments while we build three mechanical postcards of our own! While we focus thematically on movie monsters and the history of postcards, we’ll focus mechanically on the two foundational devices behind most movable paper structures: the wheel (rotational movement) and the pull (lateral movement). For this 90-minute workshop, a kit of pre-cut materials and hand tools will be provided. All levels are welcome.
Shawn Sheehy has been teaching in the book arts since 2001. His work is widely collected. Sheehy has authored and engineered two trade books. He directed The Movable Book Society from 2018 to 2023. He holds a Book Arts MFA.
