Revisiting Raphael

In commemoration of the 500th anniversary of Raffaello Sanzio’s death in 1520, this seminar explores the legacy of Raphael in his era and the centuries that have followed.

Seminar Description

In commemoration of the 500th anniversary of Raffaello Sanzio’s death in 1520, this seminar explores the legacy of Raphael in his era and the centuries that have followed. The first half of this seminar will explore Raphael’s early years, including his time under the tutelage of Perugino and his studies in Florence and Umbria. The second half of the seminar will focus on Raphael's Roman years to consider his evolution as an artist, his cultural networks, and his cultivation of an incredibly successful workshop.

Alexis Culotta, PhD, is a lecturer at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and in the Learning and Public Engagement department of the Art Institute of Chicago. She is a published scholar in Renaissance studies and has enjoyed leading Newberry seminars on related topics for several years.

First Reading:

  • Optional: Please consider reading the first chapter, “The High Renaissance,” of Marcia Hall’s After Raphael: Painting in Central Italy in the Sixteenth Century (a digital file of this reading will be sent with the email confirmation registration).
