The Mosaics of Ravenna

Created during the 5th and 6th centuries at a time of political and theological conflict, these mosaics are poised between the style and sensibility of late classical antiquity and what we call Byzantine art.

Newberry Adult Education Seminars will meet virtually via Zoom. For more information about the Newberry’s virtual seminars, including a Zoom tutorial, please see our Virtual Seminars FAQ page. If you have questions about online learning, please reach out to seminars@newberry.org.

Seminar Description

The gorgeous mosaics still on view in the churches and other buildings of the Italian city of Ravenna continue to dazzle us today. Created during the 5th and 6th centuries at a time of political and theological conflict, these mosaics are poised between the style and sensibility of late classical antiquity and what we call Byzantine art. In this seminar, we will explore these stunning works of art through their technique, style, iconography, and historical context.

One session. Registration – $85
