Online Apartment Finders

When searching for apartments online, it may help you to know that our neighborhood is known variously as “River North,” “Near North,” or “Gold Coast.” The borders of these areas are not fixed, but places listed in these neighborhoods should be within walking distance of the Newberry. See a list of Chicago neighborhoods.

Craigslist has a list of current sublets, exchanges, and rentals. Other websites provide more selective lists of rooms and apartments to sublet for shorter periods; see, for example, Rentalo. The vacation rental site Airbnb also has many available rooms/properties in the city.

Chicago Apartment Finders can help with locating sublets; call 1-888-346-3377 and let them know that you are interested in short-term housing. One former Newberry fellow highly recommends Rent.com and Apartment Ratings. Another recommends Sublet.com, which charges a fee, but has a good range of apartments. Hotpads also lists available sublets.

Sabbatical Homes has listings of sublet, exchange, and house-sitting opportunities, usually close to the University of Chicago or Northwestern University, but also elsewhere in Chicago. Most listings are for six months or longer.
