Class Description
The Newberry is an "uncommon collection of uncommon collections." The challenge is making all these amazing materials accessible and known to everyone. Our exhibition From Page to Pixel: Discovering the Digital Newberry tells the story of how the Newberry has approached digitizing the collection and making materials available through a variety of resources. This class will focus on the technology behind the oldest materials in our collection through the development of printing, and finally through the digitization of materials and the opportunities that process offers. Our exploration will include the types of substrates used in early materials, methods of writing and illustration, the development of printing and typefaces, and the digital revolution and its impact, all through materials held in the Newberry's collection. This class will provide insights on our "uncommon collection" and offer ideas on how to explore further, whether through digital resources or in-person at the library.
All virtual classes are recorded and made available to participants registered in the class. These recordings are password-protected and available for up to two weeks after the class ends.
Andrea Villasenor, Senior Graphic Designer at the Newberry, began her career as a typesetter and has embraced continual learning and teaching as technology has transformed the field.
