Joint Fellowships

Newberry Short-Term and Long-Term Fellowship awardees are eligible for joint fellowships at the Herzog August Bibliothek (HAB) in Wolfenbüttel, Germany and at the British Library in London, UK, awarded by the American Trust for the British Library. These fellowships function as add-ons to the Newberry fellowships. If awarded, the fellow will receive funding for a short-term research visit to the partner institution.

Applicants are asked to indicate interest in these joint fellowships on their Newberry fellowship application. Final selection of awardees is determined by the partner organizations. Selection or rejection for the HAB or ATBL joint fellowships will not impact the status of your Newberry fellowship award.

The Herzog August Bibliothek-Newberry Joint Fellowship support a research project based on the holdings of both libraries. It provides a Newberry fellow with a month of research funding at the Herzog August Bibliothek (HAB) in Wolfenbüttel, Germany in addition to their fellowship period at the Newberry.

Stipend: 1,800 EUR (for postdoctoral scholars) and 1,550 EUR (for doctoral scholars) plus up to 650 EUR for travel expenses.

Length: 1 month at the Herzog August Bibliothek in addition to time awarded through the Newberry Fellowship. The recipient should plan to visit the libraries sequentially to ensure continuity of research.

How to apply: The Short- and Long-Term Fellowship applications have a question where you may indicate your interest in the Herzog August Bibliothek fellowship. You will be asked to provide a brief description of your intended research at the HAB and how it relates to your work at the Newberry. If you are awarded a Newberry fellowship, this information will be passed along to the HAB. The HAB may ask for further information for their review process. Final selections are made by the HAB review committee. Selection or rejection for the joint fellowship will not impact the status of your Newberry fellowship award.

The American Trust for the British Library (ATBL) Research Fellowship Program supports a Newberry fellow for an additional short-term period of research at the British Library in London, UK. The Program especially targets graduate students, recent PhDs, early career scholars, adjunct faculty, independent scholars, librarians, or curatorial staff who otherwise do not have access to departmental research funds.

Stipend: $2,500 USD to offset research trip expenses.

Length: To be determined by applicant, depending on budget and research to be undertaken.

How to apply: The Short- and Long-Term Fellowship applications include a question where you may indicate your interest in the American Trust for the British Library fellowship. You will be asked to provide a brief description of your intended research at the British Library and how it relates to your work at the Newberry. If you are awarded a Newberry fellowship, the Newberry may then nominate you for the ATBL fellowship, after which the ATBL will invite you to send them additional application materials. Final selections are made by the ATBL review committee. Selection or rejection for the ATBL fellowship will not impact the status of your Newberry fellowship award.
